Time Revolution: The First Treatment Essence

Time Revolution: The First Treatment Essence

This best-selling essence is formulated with over 90% fermented yeast extract - a powerhouse product that visibly brightens and improves skin health within just 2 weeks of use. Its water-like consistency makes it perfect for layering to create a dewy and plump complexion without imparting any weight. Fermented yeast extract (derived from Himalayan Purple Barley) helps to raise moisture levels from deep within the skin, as well as correcting pigmentation and refining skin texture. Also contains niacinamide, which calms inflammation and helps to prevent acne, and adenosine to smooth wrinkles.  This cult product is easily introduced into any daily regime.

Why an Essence?

Essences have become more common in Western skin care, but beauty editors continue to overlook them as "nice-to-haves" in favour of serums and creams. We consider essences to be an unalienable part of our skincare regime. Here's why:

Essences are highly enriched beauty waters that can be applied to the entire face. Their thin consistency may contribute to the impression that they are "lightweight" performance-wise and whilst they don't have the rich sensorial texture of a cream or an oil, we assert that this in fact works in their favour.

Essences typically contain the highest amounts of skin-forward active ingredients, because less of the formula is taken up with silicons, thickeners and emollients needed to produce viscosity or cream-type textures. By way of example, the Missha First Treatment Essence contains 90% fermented yeast extract, whilst Enature's Birch Juice Hydro Essence Skin is made with 78% birch sap. Both these ingredients contain beneficial animo acids, minerals and anti-oxidants that are key to the brightening, soothing and rejuvenating properties of the super products that house them.

Essences are typically applied post-cleansing and toning. Being water-like, the product absorbs instantly and is also conducive to the application of multiple layers without weight, shine or any tacky sensation. Layering allows the product to be pushed deeper into the skin, concentrating the beneficial ingredients and adding more moisture to each layer. The effects should be apparent immediately, with skin feeling more bouncy and glowy.

What beauty editors overlook about essences is this ability to thoroughly hydrate and nourish the skin without adding heaviness. This is extremely powerful for those of us that have combination, oily and/or acne-prone skin. Applying multiple layers of most other types of products would certainly exacerbate sebum production or block pores, but essences are the exception. With skin being more hydrated and comfortable, skin condition is in turn improved by being more balanced and less prone to inflammation and acne.

Finally, the use of an essence helps to prep the skin for oncoming products. The typical analogy given in this case is that of a sponge. A bone dry sponge would have more difficulty with absorbing liquids (particularly more viscous ones), whereas a damp sponge would uptake those substances much faster and more evenly. Similarly, hydrating skin using an essence as a precursor to applying a serum or moisturiser should help with the application and absorption of those latter products.
